North Coast Brewing Company – Pranqster
2011 Good Food Awards Beer Winner
What do delicious beer and good jazz have in common? Quite a lot, according to Mark Ruedrich, President and Head Brewer at North Coast Brewing Co. in Fort Bragg, CA. Ruedrich’s brewery prides itself on its close connection with the Northern California music scene. The brewery lends its support to the Mendocino Arts Center and Monterey Jazz Festival, while promoting jazz education through a high school scholarship program and substantial donations to the Theolonius Monk Institute. Beyond their connection to the jazz world, North Coast Brewing is involved with a number of local environmental initiatives, including a forest restoration project that utilizes the brewery’s spent barley and hops to create carbon-sequestering biochar that bolsters soil while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Other brewing by-products from North Coast are sent to a local nonprofit, NOYO Food Forest, which uses the organic materials for compost in numerous community gardens. North Coast’s numerous collaborations with environmental groups reflect its internal efforts to reduce water and energy consumption throughout the brewing process. In the past year alone, North Coast has reduced its energy consumption by 25 percent. The Good Food Awards would like to honor North Coast for its Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale, a beer that tastes as good as the values behind it.
